Climate change is an important and relevant issue in today’s society. Recent actions made within the Trump-Presidency transition team threatens the future of climate change research. Newly appointed chief of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Scott Pruitt, is a well-known climate change denialist, and President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked and threatened the EPA’s existence.

While many people claim climate change is just a “hoax” or the temperature naturally varies, science doesn’t lie. The vast majority or scientists committed to researching climate change agree that climate change is a real and pertinent issue that is due in part by humans. A simple science experiment can show the specifics of climate change. The atmosphere is made up of greenhouse gases which capture heat from the sun. The more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the more heat is trapped, ultimately heating up the earth. The most common and well known greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide and is constantly being emitted into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial and agricultural factories. The emission of these greenhouse gases can be easily prevented by reducing energy usage in personal and cooperate settings.

Though it may not seem like much, the earths temperature has increased over one degree in the past century and is expected to increase significantly in the future, possible causing issues for future generations. The extermination of the Environmental Protection Agency would take major steps back from what was accomplished during the Obama administration and could possible take back many of the regulations put into place for the earths protection. Commenting on the new Chief of the EPA, Ken Cook, the head of Environmental Working Group said, “It’s a safe assumption that Pruitt could be the most Hostile E.P.A administrator toward clean air and safe drinking water in history.”

While climate change scientists continue to do ground breaking research for the well-being of our earth, climate change denialists in the government could overturn all the progress that has been made in the past eight years and turn back time by diminishing the EPA or taking steps to drastically decrease its power.
