Screaming fans painted blue and gold and poorly made chariots being pulled by frightened freshmen together will now be joined by the crusade of red and blue Ursuline juniors and seniors fighting for the title of Powder Puff champions.

Jesuit Ranger Day is a spirit day held on the Friday of the Homecoming game. It is traditionally attended by both Ursuline and Jesuit students in preparation for the Homecoming weekend.

In past years, the event has included chariot races, games, music played by Jesuit students, and performances from the Jesuit-Ursuline Ranger Band, Kweens of Krunk step team, Rangerettes, cheerleaders, and color guard. Although Ranger Day events have included Ursuline students in the past, Jesuit students were the main participants.

As in previous years, the Powder Puff game will be played between the junior and senior classes at Jesuit. But this year, in an attempt to get Ursuline students more involved in Ranger Day, the game will be from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m., before the Jesuit pep rally.

Natalie R. ‘10, Ursuline’s student body president, explained that the administration “wanted to downplay the importance of Powder Puff. Originally it was completely cancelled due to the events of previous years,” said Natalie.

Changes were do at least in part to ‘traditions’ such as toilet papering the homes of the juniors.

“The purpose of Powder Puff is to be a community building activity,” said Ms. De la Cerda, Dean of Students.

In past few years the event has caused unfriendly competition between the grades, destroying the unity within the Ursuline community.

This decision has been met with a mixture of emotions from both the Jesuit and Ursuline student body. Many students are excited about the change, hoping it will allow both schools to come together as a community.

“I think, for the girls and boys who are not directly involved in Ranger Day, it is very beneficial because it serves as a “pump up” for the homecoming game and the whole community can get excited,” said Julia C. ’10.

However, the girls who perform on Ranger Day find it difficult to participate in both events.

“It will be a totally jam packed day, and it will make it very hard for anyone in band, Rangerettes, cheerleading or color guard to participate. Everyone involved in Ranger Day usually has to get there at about 5:30 in the morning, so it will just be very tiresome,” said Christy H. ’10.

The date of Powder Puff is not the only change. This year the Jesuit boys will be allowed to participate as coaches or cheerleaders for the junior and senior teams.

Because the administration will no longer take part in the game, the classes are responsible for scheduling their own practices and coaching their own teams.

During the junior-senior class meeting, Ms. De la Cerda summed up the tone for this year: “We want this to be your game.”
