This morning you may have noticed an additional lane in the parking lot, which quickly became a topic of conversation among the students.  Though no students have been observed riding their bikes to school this year, some seniors can remember freshman year when Michelle M. ’10 would ride her bike to school.  This lasted about a semester because she could not carry all her softball equipment and backpack to school.  Last year, one senior also rode her bike to school.

In spite of the low number of bikers, bike racks suitable for about twenty people as well as a brand new bike lane have been added to campus.  Questions circulated the school that now making a left turn onto Walnut Hill Lane would be difficult due to the bike lane.

The bike lane is “part of our LEED certification.  Now with [the bike lane] and the bike racks in back hopefully girls will utilize them,” Mr. Smith said.

According to Mr. Smith, it’s expected that anyone who bikes would live within a mile of the school and major streets wouldn’t be an issue.  “There are sidewalks on both sides of Walnut Hill.  There is a crosswalk and when it is occupied cars are supposed to stop or the officer can stop traffic,” Mr. Smith said.

The bike lane and racks are a part of the Transportation Management Plan in the Innovation and Design portion of LEED certification.

When I first saw the bike lane, I was really concerned the carpool line to get out of school would become one lane and double the amount of time it takes to exit school from my parking spot. (which is already ridiculous as it is.) Thankfully, everyone seems to drive through the lane to keep up with traffic flow. Ignorance is bliss.

*Also note the biker symbol printed on the lane is upside down in senior lot.*

Personally, I think the bike lane is both unsafe and unnecessary. In order to even get into senior lot, cars have to drive straight across the lane. No one bikes to school, and I think that making a bike lane to get the “LEED” label, especially when it won’t be used, is a misrepresentation of how Ursuline functions and a huge waste of paint.
