Five students were recently honored for their musical gifts and traveled to San Antonio to showcase their talents.  Below is the account of Lauren H. ’10 as she describes the process leading up to All State and her experience at the event:

From January 28-30, I had the privilege to participate in the TPSMEA (Texas Private School Music Educators Association) All-State Choir, along with fellow choir member Haley M. ’11, and All-State Band members Courtney K. ’10, Flora P. ’10 and Katie R. ’12.

Getting to All-State was a surprisingly long process, not including the bus ride to San Antonio. Way back in August, we received the music. Around the end of September, we got the audition cuts.  In early October, we had to record our audition CDs. Then, you must to wait and see if you are accepted into All-Region Choir, which is comprised of about 200 kids. Next, in November, your CD is judged again and you find out if you made it into All-State, which is made up of about 160 singers. And if you’re a first-alternate, like me, you start looking in the phone book to hire a hit man so that you can take someone’s spot. Luckily, though, I did get a spot in a choir-without pulling a Tonya Harding.

All-State started at 6:30 Thursday morning, with a five-hour bus ride with the boys from Jesuit and St. Mark’s to San Antonio. The next three days were a blur of music and rehearsals culminating in a three hour performance Saturday night at Texas State University.

It was a somewhat humbling experience, knowing that everyone there is just as good as you, and in some cases, a lot better. It was a great opportunity to learn, both from the clinician (a professor at Rice University) and from all the talented choir members, as well as to make new friends and meet new people. The most popular question? “Do you really go to an all girls school? How do you do that?” And after spending five hours on a bus full of boys with only five girls, my response was, “How do you go to school with boys?”
