Brazil: Our first day in Dallas

Leaving Brazil on October 6th was very exciting because we were going to New York City! We had so much fun and visited many interesting places, like the American Museum of Natural History, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, the Wax Museum, Times Square, Central Park, John Lennon’s Memorial, and many more.
Deixar o Brasil no dia 6 de outubro foi muito animador, afinal estávamos indo para a cidade de Nova Iorque! Na verdade, nos divertimos muito e visitamos muitos lugares interessantes como o Museu de História Natural, a Catedral de Santo Patrick, o museu de cera, a Times square, o Parque Central, o Memorial de John Lennon e outros mais.
But nothing was as exciting as getting to Dallas where our host families were happily waiting for us on October 10th. Each Brazilian student spent the weekend with his/her host family so they could get to know the family members and how their houses worked. That means each student had his/her unique experience with the host family.
Mas, nada foi mais animador que chegar em Dallas, onde nossas famílias alegremente nos esperavam, no dia 10 de outubro. Cada Brasileiro passou final de semana com sua família anfitriã, pois assim puderam conhecer melhor cada membro da família e como tudo funciona.
On Monday, it was time to go to school. When we got there we could see the girls saying “Look, those are the Brazilians”, and they all would come to say hello and wish us a wonderful time. Everyone was really nice to us. Thank you, girls.
Na segunda-feira, já era hora de ir para a escola. Ao chegarmos, podíamos ver as garotas comentando “Olha, são os Brasileiros” e elas vinham dizer “olá” e nos desejar uma temporada maravilhosa no Texas. Todas foram muito gentis. Obrigada, garotas.
Here at UA, the prayer and the announcements are the first things that happen in the morning. On our first day, we introduced ourselves to the whole school over the announcements. We were nervous but it went just fine.
Aqui na UA, a primeira coisa que acontece pela manhã é a oração seguida dos avisos gerais. Também, no nosso primeiro dia, nos apresentamos a toda a escola. Estávamos nervosos, mas correu tudo bem.
Then we had a tour to get to know the school and its new building. We were so impressed with the buildings, equipment, and technology that they use. It is a very nice school.
Depois, fizemos um tour para conhecer toda a escola e o seu prédio novo. Ficamos impressionados com a área, os prédios, os equipamentos e a tecnologia utilizada. É uma escola muito boa.
American school periods are totally different from those in Brazil. Here in the U.S.A., the students must come early in the morning and leave in the middle of the afternoon. They have to take their lunch or buy it at school. There are three lunch breaks, and the 800 students are divided into groups for each lunch break.
O horário da aula aqui é totalmente diferente do Brasil. Aqui as estudantes têm que chegar cedo pela manhã e voltam para casa no meio da tarde. Ou seja, elas tem que levar almoço de casa ou comprá-lo na escola. Há três horários para almoço e as 800 alunas são divididas em grupos para cada horário.
But that Monday wasn’t an ordinary day because they had us as visitors. UA bought cupcakes as a treat for the whole school. We gave the cupcakes and said hi to each American student. Obviously, I had a cupcake, and it was delicious!
Mas, aquela segunda-feira não foi um dia típico porque, por estarmos lá, elas tiveram um intervalo especial, pois a UA comprou mini-bolos para toda a escola. Entregávamos esses bolinhos a cada estudante e ao mesmo tempo dizíamos um “olá”. Obviamente que eu também comi um mini-bolo, que estava delicioso.
During that week we had such nice experiences in many different classes such as Computer Science, Chemistry, Anatomy, Latin, Journalism, Today in the World, Kickboxing, and Art. Our art teacher, Mr. Thompson, transferred two of his digital images of Ursuline’s Sacred Heart Statue onto linoleum blocks so we could carve them. Then he taught us how to use the cutting tools and gave us instructions on safety procedures. I loved doing that! Actually all of us really liked doing that work because it was something new for most of us except for Julien and Priscila Paiva who had done that before in African Art class in Brazil. Thanks for letting us participate, Mr. Thompson.
Durante aquela semana tivemos boas experências em diversas aulas como: Linguagem de programação, química, anatomia, latim, jornalismo, atualidades, educação física e artes. Nosso professor de artes, Sr. Thompson, que é muito gentil, transferiu duas das suas imagens digitais da estátua do Sagrado Coração para as matrizes de linóleo para que pudéssemos esculpí-las. Então, ele nos ensinou como usar as ferramentas de corte e nos falou sobre os procedimentos de segurança. Amei fazer esse trabalho! Na verdade, todos nós gostamos porque foi algo novo para a maioria de nós, menos para Julien e Priscila Paiva que já haviam feito isso na aula de Artes (Afro) no Brasil. Obrigada por nos deixar participar Sr. Thompson.
