In 2008, Ursuline Dallas began a virtual exchange with our sister school in Santiago, Chile, Colegio Santa Ursula. This is a project that has facilitated through Blackboard in Discussion Board. Students from Spanish 5 and Spanish 2 Honors, who are in Mrs. Scarlett Vargas’ and Mrs. Magda Lavault’s classes, participate in this project.

Each student has her own pen-pal, and every week students come up with a new topic for discussion. Teachers From UA write a topic in Spanish, and their students reply in Spanish while the teachers in Chile write a topic in English, and their students reply in English.

“The girls have really enjoyed and learned from sharing their different cultures,“ said Ms. Vargas.

She also said that they recently participated in a conference call using Skype where the girls were able to practice their speaking skills while actually seeing one another.

    Hi! I´m from Chile:

I think that this experience it´s a huge oportunity to learn about other cultures, to expand our knowledge in english and for know dallas´s girls.

It´s really interesting to have a penpal, for write and talk about a lot of things, like tablets, christmas, clothes, etc. I really appreciate having this oportunity.

Thanks a lot to the teachers in Dallas and our teachers to make this possible. I hope that this virtual exchange continue doing.

We’re the people on the screen…in the picture.. ! Hahaha
I think it’s a reason to say thanks…. people usually don’t have oportunities like this, and that’s why it’s very important to take this oportunity… I’ve learned a lot of thing and I hope it won’t finish soon… We can improve our knowlegde, make new friends… and we can also ask each one’s pen pal for help with the gramm, pronunciation, or uses of lenguage… even we can ask -and they can ask us too, obviously- for the mistakes… it’s absolutely great :)

PS: I’m sorry about my English!!
