Our staff recently made a visit to four different frozen yogurt chains located within close proximity of Ursuline.  Here are our final results:

Orange Cup

Flavor Variety: 2.4

Four: Original, acai berry, green apple, zum-citrus

Taste: 3.7

It tastes healthy, very light, a bit tart, though with a good consistency

Topping Variety: 3.9

Nineteen toppings, including fruity pebbles and dark chocolate covered sunflower seeds

Atmosphere: 4.5

The tables in the back of the store had ipod hookup for a personalized music experience; Recycle disposal prominently located; most spacious store, but very white

Price:

A small was $3.50, a regular $4.50.

Overall: 3.62

Red Mango

Flavor Variety: 3.6

Six rotating flavors: original, coco, pomegranate, tangomonium, blueberry, peach

Taste: 3.9

Unique, tart, milky, hit or miss

Topping Variety: 3.8

Twenty-one toppings including graham cracker, cinnamon toast crunch

Atmosphere: 3.6

The staff was very accommodating, even offering us reward cards, but the store itself was very small with little seating.  Some reviewers found the photos on the wall unappealing.

Price:

A small was $2.95, a regular $3.95.  One topping was 50 cents, or multiple toppings were $1.

Overall: 3.72

Pinkberry

Flavor Variety: 4.1

Six: original, passion fruit, coconut, green tea, chocolate, pomegranate

Taste: 4.4

Rich (considering it’s frozen yogurt), thick consistency, fresh, tart without being  sour

Topping Variety: 4.9

Twenty-eight toppings including craisins, macaroons, peppermint shavings, organic fruity bears, and mangos

Atmosphere: 4.4

On the smaller side, but with ample seating; décor is modern, including the pebble floor.  Staff was friendly, but store was by far the most crowded

Price:

A small was $2.75 and a medium $3.75. For unlimited toppings (variety and quantity), a small was $3.95 and a medium $4.95.

Overall: 4.5

Gooey’s

Flavor Variety: 5

18 Flavors: easily the best variety; include chocolate, coffee, mint, strawberry, and vanilla

Taste: 4.8

Good overall, closer towards ice-cream, though some flavors tasted a bit processed.  The only place that offered cones and sundaes

Topping Variety: 4

Lots of choices, however, there was not fruit included

Atmosphere: 4.3

Reminiscent of a classic ice-cream shop, with casual decor and a family-friendly vibe

Price:

Five ounces (a small) was $2.40, and seven ounces was $2.90.  Toppings were 50 cents.

Overall: 4.5

*Our staff attempted to review a store whose name involves a personal pronoun, a symbol of love, and yogurt, but we were bluntly informed that we would have to obtain corporate permission before we could publish anything.  In other words, it’s not student friendly.

I’m going to agree with all here: Gooey’s is more like ice cream rather than frozen yogurt, but it’s still very good. I’d never been to Red Mango, so thanks for the review.

Even though pinkberry seems a little expensive, its a great deal to get limitless toppings for one low price and the fresh fruit is a real treat!! It’s hard to find fresh fruit for that inexpensive at the store!
