This January 18th, on Global Celebration Day, Ursuline Academy of Dallas will be hosting Sarah Culberson, author of A Princess Found.

Raised in West Virginia as an adopted child of two loving parents, Culberson had no knowledge of her heritage or ancestry. When she decided to investigate her past in 2004, Culberson came upon a surprising result: she was a princess.

Culberson’s father, Joe Kposowa, is one of the leaders of the Mende tribe in Sierra Leone, giving her the status of a Mahaloi, which is the equivalent of a princess.

Since her discovery, Culberson has gotten to know her family in Sierra Leone after several visits. While there, she witnessed the aftermath of the long civil war in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

Inspired, Culberson initiated the Kposowa Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises funds to rebuild schools in the area and to sponsor development in the community. “The title princess means responsibility, and that’s what I’m taking on,” Culberson told ABC News in an interview.

Her book, A Princess Found, was published in 2009 and describes Culberson’s journey of finding her true origins and helping her native community. Culberson’s visit will also fall on the same day as the dancers of Spirit of Uganda to commemorate Global Celebration Day.
