As fall approaches in Texas, high schools eagerly anticipate a beloved tradition: homecoming. The oversized homecoming mums stand out as one of the most recognizable symbols linked to this event. These elaborate floral arrangements have a rich history and play a significant role in celebrating school spirit.
Homecoming mums trace their roots back to the early 1900s, when schools organized gatherings to welcome back alumni. Initially, these events were modest, but as time progressed, students began showcasing their school pride with flowers, particularly orchids.
By the 1980s, mums transformed into larger, more ornate creations, evolving into the distinctive designs we recognize today. Adorned with ribbons, charms and other decorations, students personalize their mums, making them unique expressions of their style and enthusiasm for their schools. “Boys wear smaller versions called garters on elastic bands on their arms.” said Kaitlyn Yarborough from Southern Living.
Crafting a giant homecoming mum is not a small task. These vibrant creations can weigh several pounds and are often worn around the neck or attached to clothes. At the center of almost every mum lies a large, satin chrysanthemum flower, surrounded by flowing ribbons in the school’s respective colors. “A homecoming mum can never be too large, just like a diamond!” said one Texas mom. These mums and garters can range in price from $20 to almost $700. Students and parents alike often dedicate hours to personalizing their mums, incorporating elements like photos, charms and even lights. Common decorations include satin ribbons, small tokens representing hobbies and names or initials. The crafting process frequently involves family members, fostering a sense of community and shared celebration.
Some high schoolers take the risk and create their own mums and garters, while professional “mum makers” are kept very busy by parents and other students during the fall season. Many convenience stores and chain grocery stores like Kroger sell mums during the homecoming season and even sell them for fundraising purposes.
On homecoming day, students proudly showcase their giant mums at school events and homecoming football games. This participation involves people beyond students by including parents, alumni and teachers, all joining in the festivities.

Other states have begun to adapt this tradition in the south such as Oklahoma, Louisiana and Virginia!
