Popular Christmas Foods Around The World

By Rohini Gopal ’27

As Thanksgiving comes to an end, the jingle bells start to ring and the smell of gingerbread arrives! One of the many things to look forward to during the holiday season is the smell of gingerbread and peppermint bark.

Peppermint bark is a snack that is often served during dinner. Peppermint bark is comprised of two layers, the top and the bottom. The ingredients that are needed are semisweet chocolate, white chocolate, canola oil, peppermint extract, and 25 peppermint crushed candies.

“I love the peppermint bark from Williams Sonoma. In fact, I have to hide it to not eat it all myself” said Ms. Smith, the journalism teacher at Ursuline.

Another aroma of peppermint for Christmas is the smell of peppermint tea. While some people prefer to make their tea from “scratch,” several companies offer a prepared mix only calling for the addition of hot water. Some of the most popular tea mixes include Tea pigs, Yogi Organic Peppermint Tea bags and the Japanese herbal tea bags. “I love drinking tea when I am stressed or need to take a nap,” said an Ursuline mom.

Many families travel to see their family and friends during this time of year. According to Food Network, the Holiday Berry Meringue Wreath is one of the most popular foods showing up at many of these destinations. Meringue is made of egg whites and sugar, and the wreath is decorated with cranberry sauce and mint. This dessert takes about four hours to make, and it can serve up to 12 people!

Another ingredient that Americans love is eggnog because of its creamy texture. Eggnog overnight cinnamon rolls are a savory dessert to have before Santa comes. This recipe includes frosting, rolls and filling. “Eggnog is the best drink to have during this time of year!” said Ravi Gopal.

Other countries have their traditions as well. In Mexico, they drink a Christmas punch called ponche navideno! This punch is made of Mexican fruits with cane sugar and spices. It is made of dried hibiscus flowers, fruits, and nuts.

For those of us, however, who wish to contribute a festive food to the occasion, but don’t seem to have time, there is a recipe for you! They take ten minutes to prepare! You can bake these tasty M&M Pretzel Hugs!

Whatever the food choice may be, enjoy and celebrate Christmas 2024!
