In each classroom on Ursuline’s campus, a plaque near the door reads, “Ursuline Academy educates young women for leadership in a global society.” The Global Relationships and Cultural Exchange department takes this pledge seriously, and into the final quarter of the school year will provide multiple opportunities for students to travel and learn about different cultures.

Students appreciate the chance to learn outside of the classroom, and even make connections with these countries through their own cultural heritage.

“In Brazil, I saw a country similar to the Philippines (her parent’s native country),” wrote Danielle Cruz ‘17 in her application for the Brazilian delegation, her first school-sponsored trip abroad. “Brazil shares a similar culture with other South American countries much like the Philippines does with other Asian countries, but on the other hand, Brazil, like the Philippines, is very much its own unique entity as a strong, yet developing nation, with a different language and all.”

Spring break vacation from March 10 to 20 is the most popular week for travels across the world. Students from the Academy have chosen among delegations to Sainte Ursule and Lycée Notre Dame le Ménimur in France, Colegio Santa Ursula in Peru, Colegio Santa Ursula in Brazil and Beijing Huaxia Girls’ School in China.

“I’ve never been to South America before, and I’ve wanted to travel there for a long time,” wrote Danielle Cruz ‘17. “My old soccer coach, my friend from a pre-college program and my family friend are all Brazilian, and I wanted to get a better glimpse of what their experiences growing up in the country were like.”

Although the Chinese will still honor the 20th anniversary of the school’s relationship with China, their gifts “probably won’t be to the extent if they were the school to hold the anniversary,” explained Ms. Chinuntdet. The official honoring of the relationship between Ursuline Academy and Huaxia Girls’ School is passed between the schools every 5 years.

Easter break is the second most popular time of the spring semester for global trips. Students will have the chance to travel to Kampala, Uganda if they were disappointed by the cancelation from last year. According to Ms. Chinuntdet, the delegation was rescheduled to avoid the busy election season. Although Chile is also planned for Easter break as of January, “Chile might get put into the summer,” said Ms. Chinuntdet.

The greatest obstacle for the Global Relationships department in the coming years will be travel alerts and warnings (warnings being the more serious categorization) published by the U.S. State Department.

“One of the growing concerns we have is travel warnings,” said Ms. Chinuntdet. “That’s one reason why the delegation to France last summer did not go, and Wimbledon, which has gone the last 5 or 6 summers, was delayed last summer.”

A new program this year bringing students on a spring break trip to New York City came around as a collaboration between the Math and Music departments.
Why are students taking a chance on this new program?“I want to be an architect, and I like math, and I like music,” explained Sarah Gibbs ‘20, a freshman who is trying her first Ursuline-related trip.

As the relationships go both ways between schools, Ursuline hosted visiting delegations in January from Peru and Chile.
