After seven long years of Republican’s effort to eradicate Obamacare, Paul Ryan pulled his Obamacare repeal bill. This came as a complete surprise to everyone as no one expected President Trump to threaten to walk away from health care reform if Paul Ryan did not give his vote.

This shocking news not only caused commotion and left President Trump in an embarrassing spot because he previously established an ultimatum with conservatives where he basically boasted about the fact that he would win and be successful with the new health care bill. After the fact, his confidence proved to be mistaken because numerous republicans voted against repealing Obamacare.

Just days before the vote, President Trump repeatedly pointed the finger directly at Democrats because he assumed that just the Democratic Party opposed of the measure. He did not think, even in his wildest dreams, that the majority of his own party would vote to not repeal the bill.

President Trump should have focused on the opinions of his own party, especially since they make up a significant majority of the people in the House of Representatives. Instead, he continued to point his finger at the Democrats by saying, “We had no Democratic support. I’ve been saying for the last year and half that the best thing we could do, politically speaking, is let Obamacare explode. It’s exploding right now.”

In the words of President Trump, Obamacare is “exploding”, but most people agree with the fact that things would “explode” or become severely difficult if Trump’s bill came into the picture. The Republican bill would have repealed tax penalties for those without health insurance, reduced subsidies for the purchase of private insurance, set new limits on spending for Medicaid, repealed billions of dollars in taxes imposed by the Affordable Care Act and would have cut off federal funds to Planned Parenthood.

All of these changes are not necessarily detrimental, but most would cause an uproar for many Americans. Nationwide, people depend on Planned Parenthood and their ability to use Medicaid. If they cut back on either, or both organizations, many people would be affected by their new lack of resources; it was estimated that 24 million Americans would lose coverage.

This loss was the biggest defeat of Trump’s short presidency which has proved to suffer many a loss in a significantly short amount of time. Even though President Trump was obviously surprised and greatly embarrassed about the news, he still has hope for a reformed health care bill in the future. Despite being faced with this loss, he still asserts that things are going his way: “The best thing that could happen is exactly what happened—watch.”

Regardless of the results, Trump will not take no for an answer as he continues to urge for a repeal of Obamacare in order to introduce his “better” bill for all Americans.
