“What Would Ryan Lochte Do?”: a short-lived reality television show and a question that should not be taken too literally. Last month, amid Olympic victories in Rio, Brazil, United States swimmer Ryan Lochte continued his success, making him a 12 time medalist. Along with his title of second most decorated male swimmer, he is also known for his decorated lies.

After a party, Lochte, along with fellow swimmers Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz, and Jack Conger damaged a gas station bathroom in Rio. Lochte claimed that they were held at gunpoint, in which he commented that his response was a casual “whatever”.

When camera footage of the scene surfaced, it was evident that the swimmers elaborated the story. Although there was a gun pointed at the swimmers, the person behind the gun was that of a security guard ensuring that the men stay until the cops arrive at the station.

The swimmers paid for the damage to the bathroom and were not taken to jail. Two of the swimmers—Bentz and Conger—were taken off their plane by Brazilian authorities. To his luck, Lochte had already flown back to the states, but Feigen was detained in Rio after the games.

After the truth was leaked to the public, Lochte waited until his teammates arrived safely back in America before releasing statements regarding the scandal, in which he apologized for his actions.

“I’m taking full responsibility for it because I over exaggerated that story and if I never did that, we wouldn’t be in this mess,” said Lochte on the Today Show. “Those guys would never be in Rio. None of this would have happened. It was my immature behavior.”

Shortly after, Lochte shared on social media, “I want to apologize for my behavior last weekend—for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics.”

Due to his behavior, Lochte was dropped by four major sponsors: Speedo, Polo Ralph Lauren, Gentle Hair Remover, and Airweave.
